We are unsure when this chest was purchased, however, it was bestowed as a gift in 1995, to a couple who were residing in Oaxaca, Mexico. The note found inside states "This Arab Chest and its contents are for Alonza & Margaret Fernandez by Frances Wyers, October 15, 1995". From research, it is difficult to determine its original purpose. It could have been a tea chest, a spice chest (there are dried cloves scattered inside it), a mariner's chest, or ???. It is quite heavy and therefore likely made of teakwood. It measures 16.5 inches long x 9.5 inches wide x 6.5 inches high. The contents (3 small cups and chopsticks) are newer.
